We see the Matrix of the films as a metaphor for something just as evil in real life. It isn't a world of machines that's keeping Americans slumbering in a false reality, living off their lifeblood as parasites.

It's GOVERNMENT.

So, you see ... Mr. Smith (shall we just call him "Uncle Smith"?) really does come from Washington ... and he's not here to help you.
