DEDICATION
Upon completion of this milestone in my life, my thoughts go in four directions.
I remember my father, Philip Ford Van Cleave, whose integrity and objectivity instilled
in me the beginnings of a philosophical attitude.
I think of my mother, Winifred L.E. Van Cleave, whose loving example still shows that
humans develop best when encouraged but not coddled, learning to develop strengths
rather than indulge weaknesses by dealing directly with the consequences of their actions -- no matter how difficult it is for a parent simply to stand and watch.
I rejoice in my wonderful wife, Frances Hilda Van Cleave, who exists as constant proof
that adversity and evil are outmatched by determination and goodness, and that
Life can create exquisite beauty under the harshest of conditions.
And I dream about future generations of humans who will have learned to understand
and manage their dual nature as emotional primates and rational persons.
This is for all of them.
